Conservation Volunteer (South Oxford Roving Taskforce)
Come and join Mike and Alex to look after 36 miles of industrial heritage and important blue-green wildlife corridor. Taskforces are the backbone of volunteering on the canals, and we need people like you! This role can include FREE qualifications.
What?
The Roving Taskforce takes on challenges to preserve the heritage and environment of the South Oxford Canal. Each work party is different but can include dry stone walling in an agricultural area, repointing brickwork inside a canal lock chamber during construction work, hedge laying around an area to improve a local habitat, or conducting wildlife surveys in an specific area at a specific time.
Who?
We are looking for the sort of person who wants to look after either the heritage or the wildlife of the canal. No skills are required to join, and there will be loads of opportunities to learn new skills and qualifications provided for FREE. The only requirement is that you definitely can’t be afraid to get a bit dirty.
Where and When?
While you might only be able to work in one area, the Roving Taskforce operates across the whole of the South Oxford Canal – from the Warwickshire border to Oxford city centre. Some parts of the canal are very remote from road access or have limited parking, and may require going in a Trust vehicle from our central yard just outside of Aynho (OX17 3NU).
The Roving Taskforce is ad-hoc, and as such can be any day with about a week’s notice though we aim for once a month. Keep an eye out for messages keeping you up to date of what is happening. Training sessions are at least twice a year for different skills that will help you to improve what you can do on the canal.
