Supporting Volunteer (Filmmaker and Storytelling)

Help Tell the Story of Hatton Workshop Volunteers

Are you passionate about film, photography, storytelling, or media production? Would you like to gain real-world experience while helping celebrate the incredible work of volunteers who keep our waterways alive?

We're looking for an enthusiastic volunteer filmmaker to help create a special short film showcasing the volunteers of Hatton Workshop and the craftsmanship behind the annual lock gate awards.

What You'll Be Doing

Working as part of a creative team, you'll help document the journey of the annual lock gate awards from creation to presentation, capturing inspiring stories and the impact volunteers make within Canal & River Trust.

You could be involved in:

• Filming interviews with workshop volunteers and lead volunteers
• Capturing footage of traditional craftsmanship and award production
• Recording volunteer stories and reflections
• Filming award presentation events
• Supporting the editing and development of a professional short film
• Helping create content that will inspire future volunteers and supporters
• Taking a leading role in filming and producing the project, with guidance and support from the Trust's Brand team.

Who We're Looking For

You don't need to be a professional filmmaker. We're looking for people who are:

• Interested in film, photography, media, journalism or digital content
• Enthusiastic about storytelling and capturing people's experiences
• Able to work collaboratively with volunteers and staff
• Creative, reliable and keen to learn
• Comfortable speaking with and interviewing volunteers

Young people (18+), students and aspiring creatives are particularly encouraged to apply.

Project Timeline

This project will follow the full journey of the lock gate awards, allowing volunteers to capture the story as it unfolds.

Filming begins: October 2026

Project completion: April 2027 with possible extension in to June 2027 to include the awards presentations.
