Volunteer Lock-Keeper (Gailey)
Our lock-keepers are the friendly face of our waterways. They are there to help boaters when needed either through long flights or busy individual locks, engage with towpath users, and help with local information.
Being a volunteer lock-keeper is a fantastic way to spend time in the outdoors, getting some moderate exercise, and meeting new friends and making a difference in your community.
Gailey Lock is our busiest, and some say prettiest site, with a busy holiday rental boatyard ensuring plenty of boat movement through the season. In busier times, our lock-keepers play a vital role in saving water, managing the flow of boats through the locks, a task that every now and again may need some firm but polite diplomacy! The site has great facilities for lock-keepers, with a lovely rest room with tea and coffee making facilities.
From April to October we are looking to have volunteers operating this lock full-time, ideally as a team of four. This means we are looking for large numbers of people who can spare us a whole day every week. We would love to hear from individuals, or groups of friends who would like to work together.
Full training and Canal and River Trust branded clothing will be provided.
Volunteers must be 18 years old or over.
