Waterside Specialist (Tunnel Keeper)

This role is available 7 days a week. You can select which of those days you would like to volunteer for. There is a small team of Tunnel Keepers you will work with that share their Volunteer days on the tunnel.

You will actively support the management of Harecastle tunnel including managing the safe passages of craft. This Role is responsible for giving out a set safety briefing to all boaters wishing to travel through the tunnel, liaising with the tunnel keeper at the opposite tunnel portal, monitoring the passage throughout and managing any incidents that may occur. In addition to this you will be required to liaise with other customers who may walk, cycle or drive to the tunnel portals, at all times you will be required to promote the work and benefits that canal & river trust do and offer.

This volunteer role is to provide a polite and friendly welcome to waterway visitors, assisting boaters through the Tunnel and helping to maintain the area.

It’s a perfect opportunity for those who enjoy working in the outdoors and are perhaps looking for something different to do and want to help support the Canal & River Trust. The key qualities we’re looking for are enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Anyone can join as long as you are over the age of 18.
