Volunteer Lock-Keeper (Wolverhampton)
Join our award-winning team of Volunteer Lock Keepers on the Wolverhampton 21 Flight.
We are proud of our team of lock keepers who won the Volunteer Team of the Year at this year’s CRT West Midlands awards. They won this award for transforming the Wolverhampton flight from a down at heel urban area to a place that is now enjoyed safely by walkers, cyclists and boaters alike.
The Lock Keeper’s duty on this flight is to assist boats going through a 21 lock flight – often requested in advance by boaters with mobility issues or single handers. They also keep the flight neat and tidy, mowing, strimming and litter picking. You also need to be the friendly, public face of the Canal & River Trust.
The role requires a reasonable level of fitness as there is a fair bit of walking, and the locks can sometimes be a little bit physical! Initially you would join our existing team either on a Tuesday or Thursday, with the plan once trained to start running the service on additional days.
The role is amazing for both physical and mental wellbeing, as the exercise is modest, and the environment, and the camaraderie are both excellent.
This team run throughout the year, although the boats are few and far between in the winter, so maintenance becomes the main job. If this sound like the ideal role for you, and you can spare five or six hours one day a week (or more) then please get in touch.
